Life is full of events that happen beyond our control, where things don't always go according to plan or succeed on the first attempt. However, every experience, even the negative ones, molds us and becomes an integral part of who we are. It's crucial not to reject or conceal these experiences, but to learn to accept whatever life presents to us. After each failure, we gather ourselves again from broken pieces into a whole personality and continue our journey. This is what defines us. Rather than hide our individuality, we should celebrate it.

These plates were put back together with kintsugi - a Japanese technique for repairing broken objects and adorning them with gold. This practice is rooted in the Wabi-sabi culture, which teaches us to find beauty in imperfection. The process of repairing takes weeks and demands precision, suitable materials and conditions, but above all - patience. The amazing combination of poisonous urushi tree sap, flour, wood, stone and gold dusts breathes life back to broken objects and makes the mended area even stronger than it was before.

"Somewhere I belong"

This project brings together the Khrushchevka — typical Soviet-era apartment block that shaped the landscape of my past — and the Azulejo, the vibrant Portuguese tile that colors my present. It reflects on belonging not as a fixed place, but as a path: an eclectic combination of what once was and what now is. It empowers to embrace your own course, cover it with gold and let it shine.

Tiles were hand painted in Viuva Lamego tile factory artist residency.

Ceramic tiles, plywood, 44x44x106 cm
